Sigourney Weaver's performance of The Tempest was interrupted by two protesters on Monday night

Just Stop Oil spokesman Dr Bing Jones has defended two protesters who disrupted a West End performance, telling GB News that "you guys have got to grow up" about the climate emergency.

"The Californian wildfires are costing billions. We've seen 800 dead in Spain and 100,000 cars destroyed in one day, and it's caused by burning of fossil fuels," he claimed.

Two Just Stop Oil protesters have been arrested after disrupting a West End performance of The Tempest starring Sigourney Weaver on Monday.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed a 42-year-old woman and a 60-year-old man were detained on Tuesday on suspicion of aggravated trespass after attending a central London police station.

The incident occurred at the Theatre Royal during a Shakespeare production.

Speaking to GB News about Just Stop Oil's cause, Dr Jones emphasised the urgency of the situation, stating: "There's a single essential action, which is that we've got to stop burning oil, coal and gas by 2030. It's urgent."

He insisted the protesters were "just trying to tell your audience the facts" about climate change.

"Those Californian wildfires were worse than any similar fires in the past. Valencia in Spain, it was the worst ever," he added.

GB News host Nana Akua challenged Dr Jones's interpretation of the extreme weather events.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

"First of all, the Californian wildfires, you can put that narrative on it, the conditions were perfect, but there were a lot of arsonists there who kicked off a lot of that," she said.

Nana questioned the need for such protests, noting that action was already being taken on climate issues.

"The governments are pushing for net zero, everyone is heading towards this climate emergency that you guys are talking about, what more do you want to happen?" she asked.

Dr Jones responded by emphasising that current weather events were unprecedented.

"People that went on the stage were there to say we're past 1.5C, the last attempt to reduce the impact of climate change," he said.

The protesters took to the stage carrying a sign reading "over 1.5 degrees is a global shipwreck", making reference to the play's plot involving a sinking ship.

In a statement, Just Stop Oil said: "In 2024 Just Stop Oil successfully won its original demand of ‘no new oil and gas’. Non-violent civil resistance works.

"Just Stop Oil will once again be stepping into action this April to demand that governments commit to an international treaty to phase out the extraction and burning of oil, gas and coal burning by 2030."
