Home Secretary James Cleverly last night apologised over the incident and vowed to launch an investigation

A Jewish father has vowed to launch legal action after his five-month-old daughter's birth certifcate was ripped and defaced.

Israel, a father-of-three living in North London, received Ronnie's application with his birthplace of Israel scratched out and the document torn.

He compared the incident to something out of 1930s Nazi Germany and revealed the family is in contact with a lawyer to discuss the next steps.

Home Secretary James Cleverly last night apologised and called for an "urgent review".

Staff from an unnamed private company working for the Home Office had been suspended while investigations continue.

However, the family were "not told personally that they had been suspended" and were instead informed by the Campaign Against Antisemitism.

Israel told The Daily Mail: "I am worried because the Home Office said some staff had been suspended - not just one person - which for me raises concerns that these people working for the company were in a hostile environment."

The 32-year-old also revealed he had received a personal email from the head of the Passport Office who confirmed they were "aware of the situation" and carrying out an immediate investigation.

He added: "We are very happy that the Government took swift action but I hope whoever this public servant is is banned.

"I would like to sue them personally for the damage they have carried out to my daughter's birth certificate, my property."

Israel and 29-year-old wife Dorin are in contact with a lawyer to discuss potential legal steps and are also considering whether to contact the police to report a possible hate crime.

Responding to the incident on social media, Cleverly issued an apology and announced an urgent review into the incident.

The Home Secretary said: “We apologise to the family for the offence caused and I have ordered an urgent review of a birth certificate being defaced.

“While we establish the facts, our commercial partner has suspended some staff.

“The matter is totally unacceptable. We will not tolerate antisemitism.”

There has not yet been any further update about the Home Office's enquiries.
