The police in Tenerife ended the hunt for the 19-year-old yesterday

Spanish police are "pursuing different lines" in the hunt for Jay Slater, GB News correspondent Charlie Peters has said.

He also revealed that the police could be thinking that the missing teen could "be held against his will" after the search over mountainous terrain yielded no results.

Jay Slater went missing two weeks ago after attending a music festival in Tenerife, his first holiday without his family.

After the music event he went back to an Airbnb with two men he had met there before heading home in the morning.

He was last heard of when he called his friend Lucy Law at around 8am to say that he had missed the bus and intended to walk home, a journey that would take 11 hours on foot.

He also told her that he was lost, thirsty and his phone was on one per cent charge.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS

Yesterday, Spanish police announced that the hunt for the teen was coming to an end and Charlie Peters has claimed that the police are now "pursing different lines" as the case remains open.

He said: "The civil guard in Tenerife doesn't have a very public-facing strategy. They're quite similar to the gendarmerie in France or the carabinieri in Italy.

"They have links with the military. They are quite secretive in their operation. There are no press conferences here. There's no family liaison officer.

"Even so, they're not really keeping the family in the loop with the details of the operation. But journalists on the island, speaking to the civil guard in a non-public facing manner, have reported in the last couple of days that they are keeping all lines of inquiry open.

"Even though they've closed this public-facing search, there is a wider investigation still going on.

"Journalists I've been speaking to who are on the island told me that even if they're not visibly involved with this operation, as they were over the last couple of weeks with those mountain rescue teams, this investigation is open and they are pursuing different lines.

"Potentially, Jay Slater is being held against his will. This has been something that's been raised regularly, and that is almost certainly a line of inquiry that the Civil Guard in Tenerife will be considering.

"As that goes on, Jay's family are said to be heartbroken and devastated that this public search has closed."

A family source from the UK told The Sun: "Jay’s family can’t help thinking the trolls have won and that they have got the way. So many people have been putting horrible messages out there which has only added to the family’s torment.

"They will not stop looking for Jay or giving up. They will be staying in Tenerife and trying to do all they can to keep the momentum going and to find Jay.

"They’ve been trying to get in touch with groups in Tenerife and beyond who specialise in missing persons.

"Jay’s family knew the search would eventually wind down. They get that. But it was a nightmare scenario they didn’t want to think about."
