Artist Matt Bonner called on Labour to 'impose economic, military, and diplomatic sanctions on Israel'

Pro-Palestinian activists have seemingly put up anti-Israeli posters on the London Underground, accusing Britain of spying on behalf of Israel.

An image of the advert, on the Jubilee Line at London Bridge station went viral on X, with almost 200,000 likes on the social media platform.

The advert shows a plane hovering over Cyprus, with the caption: "Britain flies spy planes from air bases in Cyprus."

A line, similar to one connecting stations on the tube map, runs from Cyprus to Israel accompanied by a diagram of a bomb with the caption "to help Israel commit war crimes in Gaza."

Artist Matt Bonner wrote on Instagram: "By supplying Israel with military intelligence and supporting its active military operations, the UK Government is complicit in Israel’s war crimes against the Palestinian people and contributes to the ongoing ethnic cleansing of Occupied Palestine.

"Rather than maintaining its unwavering support, the UK should impose economic, military, and diplomatic sanctions on Israel, and immediately cease all military operations from Cyprus."

Footage of the anti-Israel poster sparked fury on social media. One commenter said: "Fast food and bikini ads can’t be displayed but Hamas propaganda lines can be displayed on the Jubilee Line? Why is this allowed"

Veteran journalist Colin Brazier added: "This can’t be for real? It would come quite close to inciting attacks on RAF personnel" while another asked: "Why is fake news / Hamas propaganda being advertised on London tubes?"

Transport for London (TfL) has confirmed that it had no involvement in the placing of the posters and said it is working to remove the artwork.

A TfL spokesman said: "These posters were not authorised by TfL or our advertising partners and we have instructed our teams and contractors to remove any that are found on our network."

It comes after TfL was forced to remove a series of billboards featuring a controversial Islamic preacher. An Advertising Standards Authority crackdown has seen the campaign, by Islamic finance firm Wahed, pulled from signs across the capital.

The ASA has now ruled that the posters "were likely to cause serious offence" through their depictions of banknotes on fire.

Green MP Ellie Chowns has called on the government to suspend all arms sales to Israel

Despite the accusations directed against Starmer's Government, Foreign Secretary David Lammy last year announced the suspension of around 30 licences to Israel.

He said that "for certain exports" the Government had concluded there was a "clear risk" they "might be used to commit or facilitate a serious violation of international humanitarian law".

However, there have been accusations that the Government has not gone far enough, and should suspend all arms sales to Israel.

Green MP Ellie Chowns said: "If, as he says, the Foreign Secretary takes seriously the risk of UK licensed weapons being used in breach of international humanitarian law, he must go further and suspend all export licences."
