A 37-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of attempted murder

A woman was stabbed and left with life changing injuries at the hospital where she was working.

It is believed that she works as a nurse at Royal Oldham Hospital in Greater Manchester, where the horrific event unfolded.



The woman, in her 50s, was understood to have been attacked with a bladed article or sharp instrument, although it was not a knife.

A 37-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after officers were called to the scene at 11.30pm on Saturday night.

Police have said that they are not searching for anyone else linked with the attack and confirmed that there was no threat to the wider public.

Detective Sergeant Craig Roters from Greater Manchester Police's Oldham district said: "This is a serious incident which has left a woman in a critical condition."

The woman in her 50s is currently being treated for her serious injuries at the same hospital.

Roters offered his condolences to the victim's friends and family, promising that he and his team would support them throughout the ongoing investigation.

He announced that the local community would "expect to see an increase in police presence" as inquiries are carried out, assuring residents that the officials were there to "offer reassurance" and "answer any questions".

"We know that news of this nature will come as a shock, and if you have any concerns or anything you would like to share, please speak to them," he added.

In a statement, the GMP said: “It’s believed that a member of the public attacked a member of staff at Royal Oldham Hospital.

"The victim, a woman in her 50s, suffered serious injuries and remains in hospital for treatment. Her injuries are believed to be life changing.

“A 37-year-old man was swiftly arrested at the scene on suspicion of attempted murder.

"He remains in police custody. Whilst this investigation is in the early stages, we are not currently looking for anyone else in connection with this incident, and we do not believe there to be a threat to the wider public.”

MP for Oldham West Jim McMahon took to Twitter to share his condolences, posting: "We are all shocked at the senseless attack on a nurse in the A&E department of the Royal Oldham Hospital.

"Our thoughts are with the nurse, family and friends as we wish a full recovery."
