Girl, 3, killed after tram collides with van in Manchester

Authorities confirmed the child was a pedestrian and was not travelling in either vehicle.

GMP have said no arrests have been made and inquiries are ongoing.

Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) said it was supporting police with an investigation following the collision which occurred at around 09.56 am near the Manchester Art Gallery.

A white Mercedes-Benz van reportedly collided with a Metrolink tram between Charlotte Street and Nicholas Street.

The girl is understood to have been hit by the van as it rebounded from the crash.

The Manchester Evening News reported that the van driver fled the scene after the crash occurred.

A TfGM spokesman said: "All of our thoughts are with her family and loved ones at this incredibly difficult time."

Roads have been closed and public transport services have been cancelled following the incident.

TfGM has said no tram services are operating between St Peter's Square and Piccadilly Gardens, and the network is experiencing severe delays on most lines.

They advised commuters there would be "a lengthy closure of surrounding streets near St Peter's Square".

GMP traffic wrote on X saying: "Our officers are currently in attendance at a collision, involving a tram and another vehicle in Manchester city centre."

"We are presently trying to establish the circumstances however we envisage there will be a lengthy closure of surrounding streets near to St Peters Square."

Tickets are being accepted on bus services and Northern Rail services from Ashton and Manchester Airport to the city centre.

Tributes have been pouring in for the girl, with flowers being left at the scene.
