The revelation comes just days after the Supreme Court's landmark ruling on the definition of a woman

A Liberal Democrat-run council has splashed "£13,000 on making a toilet block gender neutral".

Kingston Council is facing criticism for converting the toilet block at Latchmere Recreation Ground in Battersea into gender-neutral facilities, The Telegraph reports.

The authority's spending follows the Supreme Court's landmark ruling last Wednesday which legally defined a woman based on biological sex - causing uproar amongst trans activists.

The director of For Women Scotland - the campaign group which challenged the Scottish legislation - declared that the decision was a "victory" for women.

As a result, those who identify as transgender women will be barred from women's bathrooms and women's sport, for instance.

The Equality Act 2010 will continue to protect transgender people under the law.

Tory shadow minister Kevin Hollinrake said the council's decision was "a flagrant disregard for the priorities of hard-working people".

He added: "The Liberal Democrat-run Kingston council squandered £13,000 of taxpayers' money on gender-neutral toilet conversions, all while imposing a five per cent council tax hike, making Kingston the most expensive borough in London."

In response, a Lib Dem spokesman said: "Kevin Hollinrake should apologise and focus on his own backyard."

The party also highlighted that North Yorkshire Council - in Hollinrake's own constituency - spent cash on reducing a block to six unisex toilets and one disabled stall two years ago.

Additionally, the now-Conservative council has announced plans to increase taxes to five per cent.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

Meanwhile, another Conservative MP Greg Smith blasted Kingston Council for its decision, chastising the council for shelling out thousands of "taxpayers' cash on potty schemes".

In the wake of the ruling last Wednesday, Baroness Kishwer Falkner said that organisations were within their right to provide a third separate space - an "additional space" - such as unisex toilets or changing facilities.

She told the Daily Mail: "There isn't any law saying that you cannot use a neutral third space, and they should be using their powers of advocacy to ask for those third spaces."

The revelation of Kingston's spending has come as the authority increases council tax on its residents by five per cent.

As a result, Kingston Council has managed to keep its crown as the London borough with the highest council tax in the capital.

A Liberal Democrat spokesman said: "This is breath-taking hypocrisy from the Conservatives whose own government and councils also had to bring in gender neutral toilets.

"People won't forgive the Conservatives for crashing the economy and adding thousands of pounds to their mortgages."
