STX have released the full trailer for the new film ‘Spencer’.
According to the official synopsis, the film is set around a very specific time, where the marriage of Princess Diana and Prince Charles has long since grown cold.
Rumours about an impending divorce are around but only through the Christmas festivities with the royal family at The Queen’s Sandringham Estate, peace is established.
The film is an imagining of what might have happened during those few fateful days. The film’s director is Pablo Larraín who was behind the Academy Award nominated ‘Jackie’ (2016) starring Natalie Portman, he said; “Making Jackie (2016) has made me even more interested in discovering and revealing the intimate personalities of women who changed the face of the 20th century. Both Diana and Jackie built their identities by themselves, not necessarily connected with the men they were married to.”
This isn’t the first time Diana has been portrayed on-screen with Emma Corrin’s portrayal in Season 4 of the smash hit Netflix Series ‘The Crown’ gaining award recognition and critical acclaim to boot, however Pablo’s vision is a very different different one.
He added: “Building the character of Diana, we didn’t just want to create a replicated image of her, but use cinema and its tools, like time, space, and silence, to create an internal world that struck the right balance between the mystery and fragility of her character.”
The film had it’s World Premiere at the Venice Film Festival, where it gained a 3 minute standing ovation and already it’s been receiving serious Oscar buzz with one critic from the Hollywood reporter saying “it tells a sorrowful story we all think we know in a new and genuinely disturbing light."
It seems there is A LOT to look forward to when the new title gets it’s UK Premiere at the 2021 BFI London Film Festival in October.
