Former Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal confirms prostate cancer treatment successful

Former Red Devils boss Louis van Gaal has confirmed a successful treatment for a prostate cancer diagnosis.

The 70-year-old former United, Ajax, Bayern Munich and Barcelona manager revealed on a Dutch television that he was diagnosed with cancer earlier this month.

The footballing community gathered to wish the coach well, with Netherlands captain Virgil Van Dijk rallying behind his national team boss.

England forward Marcus Rashford also threw his support behind the gaffer and thanked the Dutchman for giving him his United first-team debut back in 2016.

Van Gaal, now in his third spell as Netherlands coach, was set to lead the county’s national side at the World Cup in Qatar but has since been replaced by former Barcelona coach Ronald Koeman.

Speaking to Dutch news agency ANP, Van Gaal confirmed his prostate cancer treatment was a success.

"I've been through everything, I had 25 radiation treatments. Then I had to wait five or six months to see if it had done its job. It did."

Netherlands will face hosts Qatar, Senegal, and Ecuador in the group stages of the World Cup when the tournament kicks off in November.
