The persistent smell plaguing in Fleetwood, Lancashire, is emanating from a landfill site

A Fleetwood resident has launched a scathing attack on the operators of a local landfill site, claiming people are being "poisoned on a daily basis" by toxic fumes.

The issue has been ongoing since February 2024, according to Labour MP Lorraine Beavers, who raised the matter in the Commons earlier in the year.

Residents have described it as a "rotten egg smell" that has plagued the community for more than a year.

The situation worsened when Storm Eowyn damaged the landfill site, ripping off some of the protective capping.

"We, the people of Fleetwood and surrounding areas, are being poisoned on a daily basis from the hydrogen sulphide and other particulates that are coming off this site.

"It's just disgusting. We're being made ill. We can't have our windows and doors open. We can't live our lives as we're supposed to live them freely.

"Be able to go out of your door and not be physically made to be sick. That's happened to me on numerous occasions. You smell the stench and the poison and you have instant headaches.

"It is not right. We the people want this bloody place closed. Council, you have a responsibility to your residents. You've not been in touch with us.

"You've not conversed with us about what's happening. You are the landlords of this site. You're being paid £200,000 a year rent from Mr. Hanshaw and his family.

"Trans waste. While we the people pay our council tax and we are paying to be poisoned.

"It needs closing. The authority must listen. We, the people of Fleetwood and surrounding areas are fed up with it. We're annoyed. We need something done. It needs closing."

Wyre Borough Council said they they've "worked with the local MP to ask the Environment Agency to close it down, they don't have the power to close it down themselves."
