An expat couple were targeted in an "anti-British" attack in Marbella when their car was vandalised with red spray paint.

The anonymous couple moved to the Spanish holiday spot from Horsham, West Sussex four years ago.

They say they were targeted by "anti-British" locals who defaced their vehicle after seeing their UK registration.

As the couple ate lunch at a restaurant, their car was vandalised.

The restaurant said it was not the first time that expats or tourists had been targeted.

The attack took place in June 2023, but the couple have decided to speak out now as anti-tourism becomes increasingly rife in Spain.

According to the woman, it appears that English registration cars are being vandalised because there are "too many Brits in Spain".

She described the situation as "sad" and admitted that houses are being sold to tourists but mostly to "Russians".

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

She added that "the Spanish are normally very friendly" and she "never expected that someone would do something like this".

In September 2023, a spike in similar spray paint attacks were recorded, while some cars had their tyres spiked.

Over recent weeks, protests about overtourism have been carried out across Spain with angry locals taking to the streets.

A recent disruption in Majorca saw around 10,000 protesters work their way through Palma.

In Ibiza, another protest took place with around 1,000 demonstrators.

However, anti-tourist protesters in Majorca have been warned that they "should be careful what they wish for" as demonstrations could be a "disaster" for their economy, according to industry experts.

Around 44 per cent of people will now think twice before booking a holiday to the island, a new poll by Majorca Daily Bulletin revealed.
