Kemi Badenoch is reportedly considering changes to the Equality Act
The proposed changes to laws that currently allow trans women in female-only spaces have been hailed as a “real win” for biological females.
Equalities minister Kemi Badenoch is reportedly considering changes to the Equality Act which would change the definition of sex to refer specifically to legal protections for a person’s biological identity.
The Equality and Human Rights Commission said changing the definition of sex under the Equality Act could result in “greater legal clarity”.
Reacting to the development, UK director of Common Sense Society, Emma Webb said: “This is fantastic news for women's rights. Kemi Badenock and Baroness Falkner have come out very much in support of this."
She continued: “The toilet situation is a difficult one for obvious reasons. I don't think that non-biological males should be allowed into female spaces.
“I just don't believe that should be allowed. But I think that one of the benefits to this is that aside from the debate around the Gender Recognition Act, people simply being able to identify as whatever they like and enter into into same sex spaces, whether it's male or female, that this does actually provide some legal clarity over the confusion between sex and gender.
“This really is going to go a long way to protecting women's spaces in what has become a febrile debate. I think that this is a real win, and I don't think that non biological females should be allowed in biological female spaces.”
