The police have faced accusations of two-tier policing since riots broke out in the capital last week

Emily Carver found herself in a heated clash with the former Met Police Chief Inspector Peter Kirkham as they discussed two-tier policing.

The GB News host said that "people are seeing it with their own eyes" when the police Chief claimed that the Met are "being attacked."

The police have faced claims of two-tier policing after a heavy-handed response to chaos on the streets of Britain in the wake of the killings of three girls in Southport.

Speaking to Emily and Tom on GB News, Kirkham said: "This is something that's been building for a long time and I don't think it's wholly to do with the police.

"I think there's a question of people having respect for authority within the country at the moment and the way they deal with all authority figures, be they parking wardens or teachers or librarians or bus conductors or whatever it might be.

"That has been on a steady downward slope basically for as long as I can remember, from the 80s onwards.

"But what she's sort of drawn attention to, particularly in relation to the police, is the bad-mouthing the police by some politicians.

"That does undoubtedly provide an environment in which people feel able to attack the police or to ignore the police."

Emily chimed in: "Hang on Peter, if people are seeing with their own eyes that the police don't turn up when antisocial behaviour is reported or if they don't turn up to the burglary of their neighbour down the road.

"They don't get involved and try and recover a burgled car, for example, then you add to this the perception of two-tier police. Releasing wrongly or rightly when it comes to protests, dependent on the cause or dependent on those taking part. And surely that's to be believed, rather than some politician saying something anti-police."

He responded: "Obviously the public sees things with their own eyes and they have their own experiences. But the reason the police aren't turning up to report crimes isn't because the police don't want to turn up.

"It's because, since 2010, there have been consistent cuts to the numbers of officers, despite the fact the population has increased over that time.

"Various crimes have increased over that time and the complexity of dealing with them has increased with evermore calls for accountability, which means writing either with a pen or with a keyboard."

Emily cut in: "Peter, sorry to interrupt you, but we've also found out that we've got numbers of specialist police officers whose only job now is to scour the internet."

He responded: "For some, not very many. The Internet is a place where serious crimes happen, death threats, rape threats and such.

"It's not just the lower level things that we always hear the stories about, about someone being a bit rude on Facebook or something."

This comes after Yvette Cooper, Home Secretary, wrote in the Telegraph that the public has lost respect for the police force.

She said: "Respect for the police, respect for the law, and respect for each other is where we must start."

She added there has been a "disrespect for law and order that has been allowed to grow in recent years".
