Nearly 50 Conservative MPs wrote to Sunak calling for an urgent independent inquiry into 'age inappropriate' sex education

Conservative MP Miriam Cates says the “lines have been blurred” between biological sex and ideology, which has resulted in Prime Minister Rishi Sunak launching a review into sex education in schools.

This week, nearly 50 Conservative MPs wrote to Sunak calling for an urgent independent inquiry into “age inappropriate” sex education following evidence that graphic sexual content and gender ideology was being widely taught in schools.

Cates, the MP for Penistone and Stockbridge, co-ordinated the letter and told Jacob Rees-Mogg she has learned of the shocking realities schoolchildren face in schools.

Speaking on GB News, she said: “The pornification of our culture through the internet puts a lot of pressure on girls to say yes to things they really don’t want.

“In some classes, they’re being taught that all of these sexual acts can be a normal part of somebody’s sex life.

“They’re failing to mention that children under 16 can’t consent to sex anyway, it’s against the law.

“It’s this blurring of the boundaries that are making children confused about the law and facts and I think it’s deeply inappropriate.

“It can be quite humiliating, it can be quite shocking.

“Some of the reports I’m receiving suggest children as young as ten and eleven are being taught about masturbation and pornography.

“I think it’s shocking for a child to be learning that at school and I think it’s deeply inappropriate.”

The signatories of the letter including former Home Secretary Priti Patel and former levelling up secretary Simon Clarke.

It comes after it was revealed by The Telegraph that some 13-year-old pupils have been taught there are 100 genders, while in some schools children as young as 12 have been asked how they feel about oral sex.

Sunak told the Commons on Wednesday he would now bring forward a review into sex education.

He revealed that he has instructed the Department for Education (DfE) to ““ensure that schools are not teaching inappropriate or contested content in RSHE [relationships, sex and health education]”, adding: “Our priority should always be the safety and wellbeing of children and schools should also make curriculum content and materials available to parents.

“As a result of all of this, we are bringing forward a review of RSHE statutory guidance and we will start our consultation as soon as possible.”

Cates admitted she remains sceptical about the review due to the DfE’s record on the matter.

She told GB News: “Rishi Sunak is taking this seriously and Im very pleased he shares our concerns but I’m very worried about the DfE doing this review.

“It’s DfE guidance that has caused this problem and I think that in the meantime, we need schools to be publishing the material they’re using, and unfortunately the Education Secretary said on Twitter that parents may need to go into schools to see it.”

Speaking in the Commons, Cates said: “Graphic lessons on oral sex. How to choke your partner safely, and 72 genders.

“This is what passes for relationships and sex education in British schools.

“Across the country, children are being subjected to lessons that are age inappropriate, extreme, sexualising and inaccurate, often using resources from unregulated organisations that are actively campaigning to undermine parents.

“This is not a victory for equality. It is a catastrophe for childhood.”
