The Student Loans Company building at Lingfield Point in Darlington has been evacuated following the discovery of a "potentially suspicious package".

Police and the bomb squad are currently on the scene, with a cordon having been put in place.


People have also been told to stay away from the area.

Durham Constabulary said in a statement: "Officers are currently dealing with an incident at The Student Loans Company at Lingfield Point in Darlington.

"A potentially suspicious package was discovered shortly before 10am this morning.

"The area is being evacuated as a precaution, and a cordon is in place while emergency services carry out enquiries.

"Please avoid the area while we deal with the incident, and we will update with further information as soon as possible."

The Northern Echo has reported that the bomb squad was at the scene.

Officers have now confirmed that the device was determined to be nonsuspicious.
