A Corton Parish Council spokesman has claimed they are not 'targeting or trying to outlaw naturists'

British Naturism's eastern region organiser has hit out at Corton Parish Council after attempting to block naturists from the beach with a "misleading" sign.

The row between the council and naturists was sparked after local authorities accused the group of committing "lewd acts" that have concerned nearby residents and holiday park guests.

The beach then erected a sign which reads: "Warning: Corton beach is not a naturist beach. Lewd behaviour will not be tolerated and may be recorded by CCTV and reported to the police."

Speaking to GB News, region organiser Nigel Newman slammed the "misleading" sign and demanded for it to be removed.

Highlighting how the beach has been a known spot for naturists "since the 1970s", Newman explained: "Corton beach in Suffolk is very, very popular - one of the reasons for that is it's right next to a car park with a cafe with toilets.

"And this is important, there's a ramp that goes right down to the top of the beach, which is ideal for disabled naturists. That's one of the reasons that it's so well attended over the years."

Noting that naturism is "not unlawful or lewd," Newman told GB News that the sign put in place is "not accurate".

Newman told hosts Bev Turner and Andrew Pierce: "They say Corton Beach is not a naturist beach. Well, that's not accurate because every beach is a naturist beach. Naturism is not unlawful.

"And the sign then goes on to suggest that lewd behaviour will not be tolerated. Well, British Naturism totally agree with that statement - lewd behaviour should not be tolerated, but lewd behaviour and naturism are two completely different things."

Outlining the actions of the group against the council, Newman stated that the sign "needs to come down" as naturism "is not lewd" but is actually "liberalism".

He stated: "What we would want to happen is the sign to come down, because the sign is misleading in a whole range of ways. It's suggesting that the beach is not a naturist beach by order of court and Parish Council.

"Well, that's inaccurate because it is a naturist beach. You can't get away from that. And particularly we are concerned about this implied link about lewd behaviour - nature is not lewd, it's liberalism."

Asked by Bev what the benefits are of naturism, Newman explained: "It's healthy, it's positive, it encourages people to be just as they are.

"It stops this body phobia that people can be inculcated with. There's this need to look perfect, this need to put on makeup, this need to dress smartly. We are what we are beneath our clothes, there's no getting away from it. And one of the wonderful things about naturism is we don't condemn each other."

Corton Parish Council has defended their actions, making clear that they were not specifically targeting naturists.

A spokesman said: "We are not targeting or trying to outlaw the naturists. The parish council recognises that naturism in the UK is legal."
