Vackery will be leading the country in song on Victory in Europe Day (VE Day) with a rendition of I Vow to Thee, My Country, and he treated Martin to a preview on GB News.

Reflecting on the “great honour”, Thackery told Martin about being the “rock star of this magnificent day”.

He drew on his experience performing on ITV’s Britain’s Got Talent, which he won in 2019.

“It’s a bit of a tremendous thing, really. I was 89-years-old when I won the competition, and I’m 95 now”, he said.

“I’ve been given this great honour. I sang this in front of the Queen because I performed at the Royal Variety Performance, and this was the song we did.”

Speaking about the significance of VE Day, he said: “It’s immensely important, as all the remembrance services are.

“We of course have Remembrance Day in November, but there’s are special. I was just a sprog when this happened, I was just a kid.

“I remember the crowds and I remember going down into London to join in and enjoy the festivities.

“All the crowd were waving flags and dancing and having a great time because we’d been at war for a number of years and it was a splendid occasion.
