Lord Hanson was appointed as a Home Office Minister following Sir Keir Starmer’s landslide victory

A Labour Minister has claimed that the 2016 Brexit debate taught him how fascists were created.

Lord Hanson, who joined the Home Office after Labour’s landslide victory on July 4, made the staggering claim during a fringe meeting about the rise of antisemitism yesterday.

The 67-year-old said: “I used to think how do fascists get created?

“During the Brexit debate, I sort of learnt occasionally how some fascists were created.

“I had it as an individual for my support for a particular political viewpoint. I had threats.

“I can see how they were from nowhere, but sometimes things happen.”

Despite urging his then-constituents to keep the UK in the EU, 55 per cent of Delyn voters backed Brexit.

Hanson proceeded to campaign for a so-called People’s Vote and eventually lost his seat to the Tories as Boris Johnson pledged to ‘Get Brexit Done’.

The main pro-Brexit campaign Vote Leave pulled in support from Tory, Labour and Ukip MPs.

Opinion polls suggest the main reason why leave voters decided to back Brexit was sovereignty.

The second reason given was control of Britain’s borders.

In a recent survey asking Britons to choose between communism and fascism, Brexit voters rejected fascism.

However, during the Brexit referendum campaign, Labour MP Jo Cox was murdered by neo-Nazi Thomas Mair.

Vote Leave and Britain Stronger In suspended campaigning for several days, with Nigel Farage separately saying: "A terrible waste of a life. Sincerest condolences to all the family.”

The Vote Leave campaign and other Brexit campaigners distanced themselves from extremists and condemned the horrific assassination.
