A 17-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after three people were injured at a secondary school in Sheffield in an incident involving "a sharp object", South Yorkshire Police have said.
Officers had been called to the Birley Academy, formerly called Birley Community College, on Birley Lane at 8.50am this morning following reports of an incident involving a sharp object.
A child received medical attention after being assaulted, while two adults were also injured.
A 17-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and remains in police custody.
Paul Whiteman, general secretary of the NAHT school leaders' union, said: "The reports coming out of Sheffield are shocking and very upsetting... Our thoughts are with everyone in the Birley school community.
"It would not be appropriate for us to comment further until further details about what has taken place are established by the appropriate authorities."
The news comes as another high school, Congleton High School in Cheshire, has entered a state of lockdown

A spokesperson from South Yorkshire Police said: “Officers are at the scene after responding to reports of an incident involving a sharp object at the school on Birley Lane at around 8.50am. Two adults were checked over at the scene after suffering minor injuries.
"A child was also checked over after being assaulted. A 17-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and remains in police custody."
A statement from the Birely Academy said: "This morning we went into lockdown as a precaution following an incident at the school. This was not a decision taken lightly but the safety of students and staff is paramount. All students and staff are safe.
"We are working closely with the police and will update shortly."

The news came as another high school, this time in Cheshire, was placed under lockdown - though leaders assured parents and the community that there is "no immediate threat".
A message from Congleton High School's deputy head read: "School is currently in a lockdown procedure. The site is secure and there is no immediate threat on site and all members of the school community are safe.
"Students do not have access to their mobile phones and we will provide further information shortly."
Cheshire Police confirmed officers attended the school this morning; a spokesperson said: "A parent had attended at the school and their behaviour concerned staff.
"Officers advised them to leave, to which they did. There was no threat to students, staff or the wider public."
Both stories follow the news of yet another school - Matthew Moss High School in Marland, Rochdale - being forced to close two days prior after it received a "threatening message by email".
At the time, a school spokesperson said: "Matthew Moss High School have received a threatening message by email and have evacuated the school as a precaution.
"All learners and staff are safe and the police are in attendance. Please do not travel to the school at this time to allow police and staff to manage the situation."
A spokesperson from Greater Manchester Police said: "At around 12noon today (Monday, April 29), officers received reports of a threat being made towards a school on Matthew Moss Lane, Rochdale. Officers have conducted a search of the school and found no threat to the school or wider area."
