New data has revealed Birmingham's New Street area recorded a staggering crime rate of 1,441 offences per 1,000 residents in 2024

A Birmingham resident has revealed her terror at living in what has been identified as England and Wales's most dangerous neighbourhood.

Local artist Ema, 26, told GB News she feels frightened walking home alone in the New Street area of Birmingham.

"I would never raise my children here. It is so scary," she said.

"The fact that this is the most dangerous place in the UK doesn't even surprise me, I do think that it is mostly teenagers who are playing at being in gangs and getting themselves in trouble."

"I don't think it has changed much in the past few years and nothing seems to get done. That is the number one reason why I would not raise my children here."

New data has revealed Birmingham's New Street area recorded a staggering crime rate of 1,441 offences per 1,000 residents in 2024.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

The inner-city district, which houses the city's main transport hub, saw nearly five people attacked, raped or sexually assaulted every day last year.

This rate is more than double that of England's second most dangerous neighbourhood, an area in Doncaster which recorded 766 crimes per 1,000 residents.

The figures, analysed from official police statistics, cover all 37,000 neighbourhoods across England and Wales.

The data shows the tiny zone of Ladywood, technically designated as E01033620, has emerged as the nation's violent crime capital.

Areas with high footfall, such as transport hubs, typically show inflated crime rates as offences are recorded where they occur rather than where perpetrators live.

In raw numbers, the New Street area saw 1,782 violent or sexual crimes committed throughout 2024.

These offences were concentrated within just one-fifth of a square mile.

When calculated per area, this equates to approximately 8,500 violent crimes per square mile in the zone patrolled by West Midlands Police.

The figures form part of a broader crime epidemic gripping Britain, with more than 2.2 million violent or sexual crimes reported to police across England and Wales in 2023/24.

This marks one of the worst years on record, with reports of crimes including assault, GBH, murder, rape and sexual assault having tripled over the past decade.
