One witness claimed nobody was allowed in or out of the hospital

Bath Royal United Hospital (RUH) was placed under lockdown by police following reports of a "security threat" this morning.

Police were called to the scene following reports staff had received a phone call from an unknown male making verbal threats at 9.45am.


A second abusive phone call was received at 10.15am and firearms officers were dispatched to the scene.

Witnesses claim that nobody was allowed in or out of the hospital.

Avon and Somerset Police have confirmed that there are no reported injuries.

The hospital and a local primary school were both placed on lockdown, but these have since been lifted.

The force added that they also received a report of a man carrying an item, which could have been a bladed weapon, but this has not been confirmed.

A spokesperson said:: "We received a report of a man carrying an item, which there were concerns could have been a bladed weapon, in the vicinity of the hospital at approximately 10.35am, but at this moment in time that has not been confirmed.

"Enquiries are ongoing to identify the man in question to establish what they were in possession of.

"The Royal United Hospital decided as a precaution to go into a lockdown.

"We advised a local primary school to also go into lockdown as a precaution too, but both have now been lifted."

A police helicopter was also spotted circling the hospital, in the west part of the city.

A police spokesperson added: "Officers remain in the vicinity of the hospital and the public can expect to see an increased presence in the area.

"We'd like to reassure everyone there have been no injuries and our actions are precautionary to help ensure the public remain safe while responding to an incident."

Police officers remain in the area.
