Ayaan Hirsi Ali is concerned that the threat of Islamism is more prevalent than ever after years of “appeasement”.

Speaking on GB News, the former politician and former Muslim spoke about the fatal shooting of controversial Koran-burner Salwan Monica in Sweden.

In a concerning warning, she told Jacob Rees-Mogg that Western democracy is “weakening” due to the threat of Islamism.

“The laws are supposedly in place to protect us - but if they are not enforced, they become meaningless”, she said.

“In the last 30 years, I watched a debate. To what degree should we protect these principles and to what degree should we accommodate the sensitivities of the Muslim minorities?

“Unfortunately, the ones who made the arguments of wanting to make Muslims feel welcome and wanting to enhance social cohesion and wanting to discourage any kind of native sentiment.

“We are seeing 30 years on, in all three areas we have completely failed. Appeasement led only to more emboldenment and aggression.

“The rise of intolerance towards immigrations and Muslims has gone up and social cohesion has almost completely broken down.”

She cited Sweden, where the incident took place, as an example of a country that has struggled to grapple with the demands of social cohesion.

She told GB News: “In a country like Sweden, where in January they had 30 incidents of crime and explosions. In 2024 there was 317 incidents of various forms of crime by ethnic minorities. The prime minister said the situation is out of control.

“You either go down that path of appeasement or you go down the path of, for instance, Denmark. You close your borders and insist on assimilation.

“I think that’s the path that leads to the desirable outcome.”

Salwan Momika, 38, was killed in the city of Sodertalje, 30 kilometres southwest of Stockholm, last week.

The Stockholm court was scheduled to deliver its verdict on Thursday regarding charges of "agitation against an ethnic group" stemming from multiple Koran burnings in 2023.

The ruling has now been postponed until February 3, with the court citing Momika's death as the reason for the delay.

Five people have been arrested in connection with Momika's death following a police tip.

The shooting occurred inside an apartment building in Sodertalje, where Momika lived.

According to Swedish tabloid Aftonbladet, the attacker gained entry to the building through the roof.

Several media outlets reported that the shooting may have been broadcast live on social media.
