Detectives looking for two missing sisters who “vanished into thin air” have called off the search of a river and harbour in Aberdeen following a three-week hunt.

Eliza and Henrietta Huszti, both 32 and part of a set of triplets, were last seen at 2am on January 7 in Aberdeen as they were seen going towards a river in freezing temperatures.

Their landlady reported the sisters, originally from Hungary, as missing after they told her that they planned to end their tenancy.

A police helicopter, a dog branch and a marine unit were among the many specialist resources deployed to help locate the pair.

However, Police Scotland have now said that “extensive and detailed searches” of the river and harbour had now concluded.

The force said that enquiries are ongoing and would now be focusing on analysing phone records, text messages and correspondence.

It added that there was “nothing to suggest” any suspicious circumstances involved with their disappearance.

Superintendent David Howieson said: “The investigation continues to trace Eliza and Henrietta Huszti, both 32, who were last seen on Market Street at the Victoria Bridge over the River Dee around 2.12am on Tuesday, 7 January, 2025.

“Our thoughts are very much with their family at what is a very difficult time.

“Extensive and detailed searches have been carried out of the River Dee and the Harbour area, using local and national specialist police resources, including the dive and marine unit, police dogs and air support, and those of partner agencies.

“These searches have now concluded at this time but enquiries will be ongoing to trace Eliza and Henrietta.

“Coastal areas, both north and south of Aberdeen city, will continue to be searched and any further information received by police will be acted upon.

“I would again stress there is nothing to suggest any suspicious circumstances or criminality.”

On January 7, Henrietta texted their landlady as they made their late-night journey, sending a message at 2.12am that they would not be returning to their city centre pad. After that the phone either disconnected or was destroyed but hasn’t been used since.

Their landlady was so worried about the time of text that she visited the apartment hours later. When she spotted some of the sisters’ belongings, including a mobile phone, she raised the alarm.

The pair, along with their other sister Edit, moved to Scotland seven years ago.

Edit told the BBC she spoke to them on New Year's Eve via video call where they appeared “happy and cheerful”.
