A leading charity urges pensioners to apply for Pension Credit by September 22 to secure vital energy bill support

Age UK is urging pensioners to apply for Pension Credit before the an important deadline to ensure they receive this year's Winter Fuel Payment.

The charity is reminding people that successful claims can be backdated by up to three months, providing a crucial lifeline for older people struggling with rising energy costs.

Once universal, the allowance is now means-tested which means only older households on low incomes will qualify going forward.

Those born before September 1958 23, and claiming Pension Credit or other qualifying benefits during the week of September 16-22 will be eligible for the Winter Fuel Payment.

Pensioners can claim over the phone by Friday September 20 or submit an application as late as 21 December 2024 to potentially qualify through backdating.

With energy bills set to increase by 10 per cent from October 1, Age UK stresses the importance of older individuals on low incomes checking their entitlement to financial assistance.

The charity also continues to rally public support for its petition to 'Save the Winter Fuel Payment for struggling pensioners', which has garnered nearly 500,000 signatures.

Caroline Abrahams CBE, the charity director at Age UK, broke down the critical importance of claiming Pension Credit.

She explained: "Claiming Pension Credit is the main pensioner benefit that also qualifies people for a Winter Fuel Payment, so we really do urge anyone who is feeling the pinch to come forward and check if they're eligible for extra help this winter."

"Despite numerous campaigns to drive the take-up of Pension Credit over the years only 63 per cent claim it and the figure has never gone above 66 per cent in the last decade.

"Yet there is £1.7billion pot of money waiting for those older people who are entitled to it, and it could make a big difference to their quality of life."

The retirement expert is urging for people to reach out to pensioners in their own life to ensure they are getting any support they are entitled to.

Abrahams added: "We would encourage anyone with an older person in their lives to strike up a conversation about the cost of bills and mention this extra help that might help them to cope and stay warm this winter, if they put in a claim."

The charity's efforts to raise awareness and facilitate claims aim to ensure that vulnerable older individuals don't miss out on crucial financial assistance during the colder months.

Pension Credit serves as a gateway benefit, unlocking a range of additional support for pensioners. Successful claimants can access vital assistance with energy costs, including a one-off £150 payment through the Warm Home Discount Scheme and £25 weekly Cold Weather Payments during freezing temperatures.

Beyond energy support, Pension Credit opens doors to further financial aid. Recipients may receive help with Council Tax and rent, reduced water bills, and free NHS dental treatment.
