The Universal Credit page on Gov.uk is down this morning, preventing hundreds of people from logging into their accounts.
According to Downdetector, both Gov.uk and HMRC have seen an increase in reported outages since 5am.
Users are experiencing login issues and difficulties accessing both the website and app.
Similar problems were also reported last night around 9 PM, affecting those trying to access HMRC services.
Other problems with the Gov.uk website were also reported around the same time.
Universal Credit website is down
PAWhen users try to log in to Universal Credit, they are met with a "service unavailable" message.
According to independent outage tracker DownDetector, over 100 users have reported issues with the Gov.uk website.
The technical issues reported seem to be primarily log-in issues, with 63 per cent of reports mentioning problems logging into their accounts.
Other problems mentioned in the reports included general issues with the website, which was mentioned in 37 per cent of issue reports, and six per cent of complaints also discussed technical errors with HMRC's app.
Frustrated users have also taken to X (formerly Twitter) to complain about the disruption.
One user wrote: "What is wrong with your Universal Credit website?", and attached a screenshot of the service unable page.
Another added "Mines doing same, I thought I’d been booted out because of fraud (Google says) lol."
A third said: "The DWP website is showing 'Sorry, the service is unavailable. Try again later'."
The cause of the outage remains unclear.
Universal Credit is a welfare benefit designed to support low-income individuals, jobseekers, and those unable to work. It combines multiple benefits into a single monthly payment to help cover living costs, rent, and childcare expenses.
It replaced several older benefits, including:
- Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA)
- Income Support
- Housing Benefit
- Child Tax Credit & Working Tax Credit
- Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
Universal Credit is means-tested, meaning how much you receive depends on your income, savings, and circumstances. It's managed by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) and can be accessed via Gov.uk.

The website appears to be facing technical errors all over the UK, but the primary areas of reports of Down Detector are in London and Manchester, with issues also having been raised in Glasgow and Edinburgh, as well as other parts of England, including Norwich, Cambridge, Nottingham, Cardiff and Birmingham.
Belfast has also seen similar issues raised with the HMRC website. While HMRC hasn't yet issued a statement on the technical errors, the problem is being discussed on Twitter.
The StatusIsDown Twitter account said: "HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC)'s website and app are reportedly still down for hundreds of users. Are you one of them? #HMRCDown."
