IT outages are impacting businesses and consumers with Tesco being the latest company hit

Hundreds of Tesco customers have been left unable to complete their online grocery orders due to widespread technical issues affecting the supermarket's website and app.

The problems, which began on Wednesday morning, have sparked more than 200 complaints from shoppers trying to purchase items through the retailer's digital platforms.

Customers of Tesco have reported that large numbers of products, including basic items like fruit and vegetables, are being incorrectly marked as unavailable in their baskets.

Users have reported being able to add items to their baskets as normal on both the website and app.

However, when reviewing their orders before checkout, customers are finding that dozens of products are suddenly being marked as out of stock.

The issue appears to be affecting a wide range of products, despite these items being listed as available on Tesco's platforms.

The supermarket giant has been responding to individual complaints on X - requesting customer details to investigate the problems.

Some customers have reported more than 20 items in their online shopping baskets being affected by the apparent glitch.

The problem is causing significant disruption to shopping plans, with customers discovering multiple products suddenly unavailable at the final checkout stage.

Britain's largest grocer has been actively monitoring the situation, reaching out to affected customers on social media to gather more details about individual cases.

A Tesco spokesperson said: "We're working to fix a technical issue which is affecting some of our customers' online baskets. We are really sorry for the inconvenience caused."

According to service status website Downdetector, the technical issues first emerged at around 9.30am on Wednesday morning.

The website has logged more than 200 reports of problems with Tesco's website and app since the issues began. The problems continue to affect customers attempting to complete their online grocery orders through the retailer's digital platforms.

In recent months, many businesses have been detrimentally impacted by IT glitches with customers unable to process payments.

Notably, high street banks have been inflicted by this issue with some customers left incapable of accessing their own hard-earned cash.

Shilpa Doreswamy, a sector director of Retail Banking Solution, at GFT, said: "IToutages highlight a critical problem: many high street banks are hampered by complex legacy tech estate and legacy processes.

"Even minor disruptions can lead to a far-reaching impact, including customer trust. Over a third of Brits are worried about bank IT failures - and they have good reason.

"Aging systems struggle to meet modern digital demands, eroding customer trust. In contrast, neobanks built on advanced cloud native technologies rarely face such disruptions.

"Business resilience is becoming increasingly critical, and it is imperative for incumbent banks to modernise or risk losing customer confidence."
