Pensioners are being urged to “check” their bank accounts as soon as possible to see if they have been awarded an “enhanced” Winter Fuel Payment.
Mel Stride MP, the Work and Pensions Secretary, appeared on GB News earlier today to reiterate the Government’s support for the elderly.
The Winter Fuel Paymentis given to those born before September 25, 1957 to help pay their energy bills.
Amid the cost of living crisis, pensioners could get a boost worth between £150 to £300 which takes the amount offered by the payment up to £600.

Speaking to GB News earlier today, Mr Stride said: “We believe that pensioners really matter. Winter, it is a tough time as the temperatures drop. It’s absolutely freezing out here this morning.
“What we’ve provided is an enhanced Winter Fuel Payment which would £500 to £600 for pensioner households.
“That’s eight million pensioner households that have received that because we think it’s important to look after our pensioners at what is sometimes a joyous time of year, but also can be a more expensive time of year.
“Of course, that’s on top of the 8.5 per cent increase and the respecting of the triple lock of the state pension that will come in as of April of next year.”
The MP for Central Devon reminded elderly people that this financial assistance is available to nearly everyone of state pension age.
Mr Stride added: “It’s not means-tested and 99 percent of the payments that are due to be made have now been made.
“So, if you are a pensioner in receipt of the state pension, check your bank account. You’ll see it’s a Bacs [Bankers' automated clearing system] transfer payment.
“It will have a code next to it, which is DWP, and the Winter Fuel Payment, ‘WP’ next to it. Really look out for that.”

Most individuals get the Winter Fuel Payment automatically if they meet the benefit’s eligibility criteria.
They will receive a letter confirming how much they are entitled to either in October or November.
Those who believe they are eligible but have not received a letter should contact the DWP as soon as possible.
