Passport prices set to rise next month in major cost of living blow to Britons

According to the Home Office, the fees will help the Government move transition towards a system that "meets its costs through those who use it" and cut reliance on funding from taxes.

It should be noted the Government does not make a profit from passport applications with fees going towards paying for the process, consular support overseas and processing British citizens at borders.

Here is a full list of the proposed changes to standard passport application fees by the Home Office:

• Fee for a standard online application made from within the UK will increase from £88.50 to £94.50 for adults
• Fee for a standard online application made from within the UK will increase from £57.50 to £61.50 for children
• Postal applications will increase from £100 to £107 for adults and £69 to £74 for children

Here is a full list of the proposed changes to the premium passport application fees by the Home Office:

• Fee for a Premium Service (one day) application made from within the UK will increase from £207.50 to £222 for adults
• Fee for a Premium Service (one day) application made from within the UK will increase from £176.50 to £189 for children

Here is a full list of the proposed changes to oversea passport application fees by the Home Office:

• Fee for a standard online application when applying from overseas for a UK passport will rise from £101 to £108 for adults
• Fee for a standard online application when applying from overseas for a UK passport will increase from £65.50 to £70 for children
• Overseas standard paper applications will increase from £112.50 to £120.50 for adults and £77 to £82.50 for children.

With its announcement, the Home Office and Passport Office is reminding customers customers to apply in good time before their travel date.

Last year, in cases where no additional information was needed, 99.7 per cent of standard application where processed within a three-week period.

In April 2014, the cost of applying for a passport increased by seven per cent, after a sizable nine per cent rise in February 2023.

There is expected to be a surge in applications from travellers whose expiry dates are coming up and who want to beat the hike in cost.

Government ministers are expected to confirm the price hike will come into effect on April 10.
