Marks and Spencer has more than 400 stores across the country

Marks and Spencer has confirmed the closure of another store, blaming “changing” shopping habits.

The retailer will permanently close the M&S store in Queensgate Shopping Centre on April 20.

An M&S spokesperson said: "We would like to thank all our customers who have shopped in the store.

"In recent years we have invested over £31million in our stores in the East of England and we will keep serving our customers at our nearby Serpentine Green Foodhall and Brotherhood Retail Park store.”

M&S proposed closing the site in January earlier this year, and has now confirmed the location will shut.

At the time, regional manager Craig Burton said affected employees would be offered "alternative roles with M&S wherever possible".

The retailer thanked customers for shopping in the store.

The nearest alternative stores are the M&S Peterborough Brotherhood site and M&S Foodhall in Serpentine Green Shopping Centre.

Mr Burton added: "Shopping habits are changing, so we're rotating our store estate to make sure we have the right stores to offer customers.

"In recent years we have invested over £31million in our stores in the East of England and we look forward to working with the local council to bring forward plans for further future investment in to Peterborough and the wider local area."

A local resident contacted GB News regarding the closure, expressing their concern about the closure of the two-floor store, which includes a food hall, following the departure of John Lewis from the area several years ago.

"Another major commercial blow to Queensgate since John Lewis closed about two years ago," they said.

According to reports this week, M&S will also close its Baxtergate store in Doncaster.

Doncaster FreePress reports Kerry Ely, M&S regional manager, said: “Shopping habits are changing, so we’re rotating our store estate to make sure we have the right stores with the right space to offer customers a brilliant shopping experience.

“We’re excited to be announcing a £7million investment today to extend our Wheatley Hall Road Simply Food store in the Wheatley Centre Shopping Park, tripling its size to deliver a bigger foodhall and brand-new spacious and stylish 20,000 sq ft clothing and home department.

"This follows a £21million investment last year in new stores across Yorkshire.

“Once the extension is complete in summer 2025, our Baxter Gate store will close.

"We are offering our colleagues alternative roles at M&S and in the meantime, we look forward to continuing to serve our customers across Doncaster.”

Marks and Spencer may close its store in Ilford, London for good.

On March 15, M&S announced it is discussing the proposed closure.

Nicholas Pucci, M&S regional manager, said: "Shopping habits are changing, so we’re rotating our store estate to make sure we have the right stores with the right space to offer customers a brilliant shopping experience.

"As part of this transformation, earlier this month we announced to colleagues our proposal to close the M&S Ilford store.

“Our priority now is to talk to our colleagues about what this announcement means for them. Should the proposals go ahead, we will offer them alternative roles with M&S wherever possible.
