Marks and Spencer has issued a major update after an IT glitch left shoppers unable to use their contactless cards in stores throughout the UK.

The clothing and food company said that it has been managing a “cyber incident” over the bank holiday, with services still currently impacted.

PAMachin said: “I'm writing to you to let you know that over the last few days M&S has been managing a cyber incident.
“To protect you and the business, it was necessary to temporarily make some small changes to our store operations, and I am sincerely sorry if you experience any inconvenience.
“Importantly, our stores remain open, and our website and app are operating as normal.
“There is no need for you to take any action at this time and if the situation changes, we will let you know.”
M&S LATEST:
M&S said it had reported the incident to the National Cyber Security Centre and hired cybersecurity experts to help investigate and manage the issue.
Several consumers cited that this issue has lasted throughout the majority of the bank holiday, with the outage beginning for some from Saturday, April 19.
“We are taking actions to further protect our network and ensure we can continue to maintain customer service,” the retailer said to the London Stock Exchange.
“Customer trust is incredibly important to us, and if the situation changes an update will be provided as appropriate.”

MARKS AND SPENCERShoppers fumed online after they faced issues whilst shopping in store over the weekend.
A customer at the retailer’s Plymouth store posted on X on Saturday that they “could not collect my online purchase today, previous visit could not return an item as tills were down …please sort out your poor IT situation”.
Another said: “I’ve tried to return some clothing to the Camden store and have been told that your WiFi has been down company wide since Saturday so I can’t return them.
“In a queue with 10 customers at @marksandspencer, I was the only person remaining when they announced that their contactless service was not working on their card machine,” said a third.
“Welcome to a world where they will stop you from using facilities whenever they want.”
