Lloyds Banking Group, which owns Halifax, has closed dozens of branches in the past year which has impacted the way banking services operate

Halifax is planning to close another 23 bank branches within the next year in a blow to the financial institution's customers.

Bank branch closures are continuing to hit high streets across the UK with Halifax shutting down more locations in the months ahead.

Other high street banks and building societies which have shut branches in recent years include NatWest, Metro Bank, Virgin Money and Lloyds.

As part of Lloyds Banking Group, Halifax has joined this list of financial institutions with bank bosses citing changing consumer habits as to their reasoning.

Since the pandemic, customers have opted to use online banking and apps to manage their money in lieu of in-person services.

Despite Halifax being set to shut down close to two dozen more branches, the bank has already carried out numerous closures in 2024.

The latest research carried out by consumer watchdog Which? found that over 6,000 bank branches have been shut down since 2015 in a blow to local communities.

Previously, the organisation warned the "alarming rate" of closures could result in three million Britons being left without sufficient access to physical cash services.

Lloyds Banking Group, which is made up of Lloyds Bank, Halifax and Bank of Scotland, has shut 1,146 sites over the period.

High street banks and building societies have been told to fill the gaps in local cash provision under new rules proposed by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA).

New legislation that came into effect last month has given the regulator greater powers to make sure savers could withdraw and deposit cash.

In recent months, new community banking hubs and "super ATMs" have been set up in response to the rate of bank branch closures.
