Coventry Building Society has promised to “broaden” its national bank branch “footprint” amid its proposed takeover of Co-operative Bank.
The building society agreed to a merger deal with the bank for an estimated £780million, it was announced yesterday.
As part of the announcement, Coventry Building Society’s board outlined what this deal would mean for current and future members.
In the statement, the financial institution stated the it would “broaden the society’s channels and distribution capabilities including an enlarged, national branch footprint”.
This commitment to remaining on Britain’s high streets comes amid a wave of bank branch closures sweeping the UK.
Barclays, NatWest and Royal Bank of Scotland have been among the financial institutions to confirm closures in recent months.

There has been a growing concern in recent years over the increase in bank branch closures with Which? describing it as happening at an alarming rate .
The consumer champion previously warned that three million Britons are at risk of losing sufficient access to cash.
LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:
In May 2023, Age UK published a survey of over 65s which found that 39 percent of respondents with a bank account were not managing their cash online.
This is the equivalent to 4.09 million people and suggests a significant amount of the population is at “high risk of financial exclusion”.
Sam Richardson, the deputy editor of Which? Money, said: “A closed bank branch isn't just a high street eyesore, but one less place for consumers to go to withdraw cash or access in-person banking services.
“Alternatives like banking hubs could help plug the gaps, but they are being rolled out too slowly, so more must be done to ensure communities get these replacements for their closed bank branches as soon as possible.”
