Summer Sundays offers rewards to thousands of households

British Gas has launched its Summer Sundays scheme to limited fanfare, offering its customers discounted energy in off-peak hours.

Rolled out under the radar, the little known scheme presents an opportunity for households to secure 50 per cent off all electricity used each Sunday.

Running from late June through to September 24, the discount is eligible between the hours of 11 am and 4 pm on Sunday.

Part of the PeakSave programme, British Gas have launched the scheme to reward users who use energy when demand is low on Sundays.

British Gas estimates that the scheme could save its customers £5million in total.

This means that those who sign up are line to save almost £30 over the 14 week period.

The scheme has initially launched to some 150,000 households, with further spaces available.

Customers can register their interest on the British Gas website, where they will need to provide a full name, email address and customer reference number.

To put the scheme in perspective, British Gas has said that a household using an electric oven for two hours each Sunday could save £8.90 over the course of the summer.

Meanwhile, there are £5.37 in savings over the same timeframe for those using a tumble dryer one hour a week.

One hour of vacuuming cops £2.97, one hour of a washing machine £4.52, and two hours playing video games saves 99p.

It comes as British Gas owner Centrica announced a surge in profits to £2.8billion in 2022 - up from £392million the year before.

The huge increase comes in the aftermath of war in Ukraine with gas and oil companies across the sector having announced record profits, despite households facing high energy bills.

Russia's invasion led to a ban on the import of gas and oil from the country, increasing the whole sale price of imports from elsewhere.
