Boots is currently pushing ahead with its cost-cutting plans to close around 300 branches across the UK

Boots will be closing another pharmacy for good today after over 35 years in business.

The Boots in Queensway, London, was confirmed in a sign in the window that read: "We’re closing. This store will close on 28 May 2024."

The health and beauty retailer will shut its doors for good at 9pm.

Shoppers have been left devastated as this has been their local "for about 35 years".

Queensway will not be left without a Boots store however, as a new store will open just a few doors down.

The new store will be a few minutes away at 166 - 172 Queensway.

One shopper said: “Absolutely devastated, the pharmacy here has much more accessible hours than any other in the area.”

“I think I’ve been coming here for about 35 years,” said another shopper.

On the new store, a Boots spokesperson said: "A brand-new Boots store is set to open in Queensway, London on Wednesday morning.

"The new look store includes a selection of exciting new brands and an updated health and beauty shopping experience.

"The existing store in Queensway will close on Tuesday evening. We look forward to welcoming customers to our new store soon.”

Boots is among the retailers that are preparing to carry out a wave of store closures in 2024 in a blow to shoppers.

The pharmacy first announced plans to slash its retail portfolio from 2,200 to 1,900.

The retailer is continuing with its plans to shut hundreds of UK stores, after announcing plans to cut its store estate by around 300 in 2023 and 2024.

A spokesperson said last year: "Evolving the store estate in this way allows Boots to concentrate its team members where they are needed and focus investment more acutely in individual stores with the ambition of consistently delivering an excellent and reliable service in a fresh and up-to-date environment."

In most cases, Boots has said shoppers should have an alternative store less than three miles away.

Affected workers will also be offered alternative roles in other stores.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

So far this year many Boots branches have closed with places across the UK.

A branch in Kent closed on March 20 while Castlecroft in Wolverhampton shut on March 21.

North Kenton, Newcastle has closed, along with Welwyn Garden City and the East Parade store, Heworth, York.
