Customers of Barclays appear to be unable to check their bank accounts using the app and online banking services

Barclays customers have been dealt an outage blow as it is understood the bank's app and online banking services appear to be down.

The high street financial institution's customers were not able to check their accounts on January 31, which is a pay day for millions of Britons due to it being the last working day of the month.

In recent years, major banks have seen their app and online banking services experience outages, which has affected customers being able to access their money and make payments.

Responding to the reports, Barclays shared that it was aware of the issues and it was “sorry about this” and assured customers it was “working hard to fix the issue”.

“You may have trouble using some features in our app, Online Banking as well as payments in and out of your accounts - we're also unable to help you over the telephone or our Message us service,” the bank added.

Speaking to GB News, Martin Quinn, the director of the Campaign for Cash, broke down the impact of the latest outage issues being experienced by Britons.

He explained: "The over reliance on banking apps and online banking is leaving people literally penniless when outages are happening so frequently

"Always try and carry cash not just as a backup, but as a main form of making payments, because a ten pound note will never crash."

Taking to social media, Barclays customers shared their outrage over the latest outage and asked the bank to clarify what is going on.

One customer shared: "Hey @BarclaysUKHelp@Barclays. Tried a couple of times to pay an invoice with your app this morning. No dice. Getting the error message BG010 - unable to retrieve your account details at present. Not great."

In response to this comment, the bank said: "We’re sorry about this and we’re working to fix this as soon as possible.

"You can still use your cards and cash machines as normal. For updates on all of our services and to request a text when we’re back up and running, search ‘Barclays service status’ online."

Those affected by the incident also highlighted that January 31 also falls on an important tax deadline, which many workers need to meet to avoid penalities.

Another customers added: "You do realise it's the last day to pay @HMRCcustomers@HMRCgovuk Self Assessment?

"You do realise there are financial penalties for missing this payment? Will you be compensating this loss?"

Based on data reported by Downdetector, Barclays' outage issues began at around 10:30am and are understood have impacted customers until this afternoon.

Oliver Sissons, the SEO Director at digital PR agency Reboot Online, previously outlined why user experience on apps is vital in helping organisations improve relationships with customers.

He explained: "In today's digital world, ensuring that your website or app offers a good user experience is more important than ever. Failing to do so risks consumers engaging less with your product and brand, and even seeking alternative options who provide a better user experience at the first chance they get and as soon as it makes sense to do so.
