Barclays is now set to close 96 bank branches in 2024 and 2025

Barclays has announced plans to close 22 more bank branches this year, on top of the 68 closures which are already set to take place in 2024, ahead of six shutting in 2025.

The high street bank announced it would shut down 40 of its sites last month.

Barclays said the ability to bank via their app, online and by telephone has led to a "big impact" on the number of customers coming into branches.

Barclays has now closed 1,140 bank branches since 2015, according to Which?.

Barclays said they need to 'adapt' as branch visits fall

PA

Critics have expressed concern about widespread bank branch closures across the UK, warning the vulnerable and elderly are likely to be negatively affected.

A Barclays spokesperson said: “As visits to branches continue to fall, we need to adapt to provide the best service for all our customers.

"Where there is no longer enough demand to support a branch, we maintain an in-person presence through our Barclays Local network, live in over 300 locations, based in libraries, town halls, mobile vans and our banking pods.

"We also support access to cash with our cashback without purchase service, 24-hour deposit-taking ATMs and by working alongside the Post Office and Cash Access UK.”
