Aldi has committed to opening 500 more stores in the UK over the long-term

Aldi has launched a new nationwide initiative as the supermarket strives to expand its store estate.

The supermarket is seeking input from members of the public as it looks for new locations to set up shop.

The areas which have the most suggestions will be considered as part of the retailer's commitment to build hundreds of new stores across the UK.

Aldi currently has more than 1,000 stores and is committed to continuing towards its long-term target of more than 1,500 UK stores.

Jonathan Neale, Managing Director of National Real Estate at Aldi UK, said: “We want to make high-quality food accessible to all, but there are still some areas that either don’t have an Aldi or have potential for more stores.

“We’ve identified some key places where there is demand for more stores already, but now we are calling on the public to share their views.

"This will be used to help inform our property search over the coming years.”

People who want to suggest their town for consideration by Aldi should email NextNewStore@Aldi.co.uk.

They need to clearly state their postcode and explain why they believe the area needs a new Aldi store.

Suggestions should be sent in by May 31, 2024.

Aldi is planning to update customers on the results and its latest priority "wish list" later this year.

The firm said it will add the most popular locations to its target list, although this doesn't guarantee a store will open in these locations.

Rival retailer Lidl announced plans to open hundreds of new stores this week.

The firm said it plans to open new stores in Bristol, Birmingham and Berwick, Scotland, in the coming months.

New stores will also open in London, where Lidl is now the third-largest supermarket, in Wandsworth, Fulham, Hoxton and Canning Town.

The supermarket also announced an updated list of locations where it would like top open new stores, if it can.
