Sir Keir Starmer has announced £300million funding for domestic offshore wind supply chains as part of a push to secure clean energy investment in the UK.
The funding through publicly-owned company Great British Energy, brought forward as an initial investment ahead of the spending review, will be invested in a domestic supply chain for components such as floating platforms and cables for the offshore wind industry.
The Prime Minister, making the announcement ahead of an energy security summit in London, said the fast-tracked funding would create jobs and strengthen UK security, as he called for international investment in British clean energy.
In addition, a Scottish wind farm hoped to power up to 1.3 million homes will help the UK in “getting off the fossil fuel rollercoaster”, Energy Secretary Ed Miliband has said ahead of it being switched on.
The Moray West development – built by Ocean Winds – employed 1,500 people during its construction and is hoped to reach an output of 882 megawatts at full capacity.
The development also included building the largest turbines in British waters, with some of the 60 structures rising up to 257m above sea level.
With that in mind, do you think the government's net zero plans will make Britain poorer? Have your say by voting in the poll below.
