The PM and Ursula von der Leyen agreed that Europe must take action for the good of collective security on the continent

Sir Keir Starmer has told European leaders that they need to 'step up' in their support for Ukraine, whilst reiterating the UK's "ironclad support" for Kyiv.

The PM spoke with the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen earlier this morning, with the two leaders agreeing Europe must take action for the good of collective security on the continent, No10 said.

"Ahead of the three-year anniversary of Russia’s barbaric illegal war, they discussed the need to secure a just and enduring peace in Ukraine, and agreed that Europe must step up for the good of collective European security," a Downing Street spokesman said.

Donald Trump launched a scathing attack on European leaders last night, saying that figures such as Starmer and Emmanuel Macron have "done nothing" to help end the war in Ukraine.

Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the UK, France and other allies have been providing Kyiv with weapons and aid.

Starmer has now said that the UK is "ready to play a leading role" in Ukraine’s defence and security, including the commitment of £3billion a year until 2030.

He said alongside the aid, the UK must be "ready and willing to contribute to security guarantees to Ukraine by putting our own troops on the ground if necessary".

Last night, it was revealed that Starmer is set to defy Trump with a new aid plan for a fresh Ukraine.

The Prime Minister will reportedly reveal the "triple whammy" of measures on February 24, the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
