Michelle Dewberry met VIP GBN members during a live online Q&A last week

Michelle Dewberry spoke about standing as an independent candidate in the 2017 General Election this week, during an exclusive Q&A with VIP GB News members.

During the Meet the Presenters LIVE event, which is exclusively for VIP members, the presenter was asked whether she would consider standing as a candidate again.

She replied: "To put it politely, I think I had a lucky escape at not getting elected last time, quite frankly. So currently I would say no.

"To be clear, I've never had political ambitions to be in Westminster, for the sake of being in Westminster and power. That's never been my interest."

"My motivation was that I am passionate about my hometown, which is Hull - West Hull to be specific," she explained.

"You might think this is egotistical, but I passionately believed that I could represent the city better than the people who have been running the city for a very long time.

"I think I've got a different outlook, different approach, and that's why I ran not just once, but twice.

"One of the things I underestimated is just how difficult it is because you start with absolutely nothing. It's just you.

"There's nothing. There's no database of voters. Everything has to be built from the ground up. It's very, very, very difficult.

"There's a lot of freedom in that, by the way, because you can just kind of operate in the way that you think is right.

"But would I do it again? As things stand now, I must say no, but I wouldn't want to dissuade anybody on this call that is perhaps thinking of standing because I think getting into the Houses of Parliament, is a way to try and effect change.

"So if you're sitting in your passion about your area, you think you could do things better. I do believe in taking risks and taking chances. Give it a go.

"You'll need a long lie down afterwards, though. I can promise you that."
