The election campaign was driven by the nation's stumbling economy and persistent deliberation on migration

Th exit polls have been released in Germany, with Olaf Scholz' Social Democratic Party (SPD) polling at a historic low, whilst Conservative parties have come out victorious.

Opposition leader Friedrich Merz's center-right Christian Democratic Union party is leading the votes with 29 per cent, with Alternative for German (AfD) coming in second with 19.5 per cent.

SDP, the current leading party, are on track for their worst result ever since World War Two, polling at 16 per cent.

Giving his first remarks following the exit poll, Scholz says it is a moment "in which we have to acknowledge we have lost the election".

The election campaign was driven by the nation's stumbling economy and persistent deliberation on migration.

As part of AfD's manifesto, they announced they plan to close Germany's borders. Co-party leader, Alice Weidel, has also publicly embraced the term "remigration" - the mass "return" or deportation of people with a migrant background.

"And I have to be honest with you: if it's going to be called remigration, then that's what it's going to be: remigration," she said last month.

US President Donald Trump praised the result of the exit polls in Germany, saying it’s “a great day” for the country as well as the United States.

“Much like the USA, the people of Germany got tired of the no common sense agenda, especially on energy and immigration, that has prevailed for so many years,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

Prior to the election, Vice President JD Vance issued a stark warning at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), declaring that mass unvetted migration poses the greatest threat to Western nations.

"The greatest threat in Europe, and I would say it was the greatest threat in the United States until about 30 days ago, is that you've had the leaders of the West decide that they should send millions and millions of unvetted foreign migrants into their countries", Vance told the conference.
