Those with mobility issues currently have access to free parking close to their desired destination with a Blue Badge

Blue Badge holders, for people with mobility problems, may park for free and as long as they want, as long as the badge is displayed.

The badge gives individuals the ability to park as close as possible to destinations as a passenger or driver in a vehicle.

But, a local authority is set to remove this crucial benefit for Blue Badge holders as it gets ready to trial new enforcement cameras.

Tonbridge and Malling Council is looking to install automatic number plate recognition cameras on a 12-month trial.

The cameras would be installed across two council-owned car parks, but drivers have been warned the move will affect the most vulnerable.

Blue Badge holders who currently use Haysden Country Park and Western Road in Borough Green will no longer be able to park for free at those locations.

Under the new proposal, the council stated: “Currently disabled drivers with a blue badge, can park for free.

“If we move to numberplate enforcement, these blue badges can’t be identified and they will need to pay at the ANPR sites.”

Some argue that those with mobility issues have no choice but to use their cars to travel, whereas able-bodied individuals can use public transport, therefore, their travel costs should be subsidised.

With that in mind, do you think it is right for blue badge holders to lose access to free parking? Have your say and comment above now.
