The keto diet plan is high in fat and low in carbohydrates
The ketogenic, or keto, diet plan is a favourite among many hoping to lose weight.
It centres around eating foods high in healthy fats, and trying to eat less than 50 grams of carbohydates a day.
This diet is reported to have a lot of health and weight loss benefits, but the extreme plan is not for everyone.
Speaking exclusively to GB News, nutritionist and SAQ coach at www.bio-synergy.com Daniel Herman shared the benefits and drawbacks of the plan.
The keto diet can help with weight loss, an expert explained
PEXELS
He said: "The ketogenic (keto) diet is a low-carbohydrate, high-fat eating plan that aims to shift the body's metabolism into a state called ketosis.
"In ketosis, the body primarily relies on fat for energy instead of carbohydrates. This shift is achieved by drastically reducing carb intake and increasing fat consumption."
Weight loss
"By limiting carb intake, the body's glucose reserves are depleted, and it starts breaking down fats for energy," he said.
"This can lead to weight loss as stored fat is utilised."
Appetite control
"High-fat and moderate-protein meals on the keto diet can help regulate appetite and reduce hunger, which might result in fewer calories consumed."
Blood sugar management
"Due to its low-carb nature, the keto diet can help stabilise blood sugar levels, benefiting people with type 2 diabetes or insulin resistance."
Enhanced mental focus
"Some individuals report improved cognitive function and concentration on the keto diet, likely due to the sustained energy provided by ketosis."
Steady energy levels
"Ketosis provides a consistent fuel source from fat stores, preventing energy crashes often associated with carb-rich diets," Daniel continued.

Potential heart health
"Some research indicates that the keto diet could improve heart health by lowering triglycerides, raising HDL cholesterol, and reducing blood pressure in some individuals."
Epilepsy management
The expert said: "Originally developed to treat epilepsy, the keto diet can help reduce the frequency and severity of seizures, particularly in drug-resistant cases."
Daniel also offered a warning for those hoping to try the plan.
He concluded: "However, the keto diet isn't suitable for everyone.
"It requires careful planning to ensure proper nutrient intake and might lead to short-term side effects like the 'keto flu' during the adaptation phase."
