Middle-aged ladies may want to stop wearing all-pastel outfits or risk looking older

The right clothes can take years off a woman's age, while the wrong ones can be prematurely ageing.

According to a style influencer for women over 50, all-pastel outfits are not doing middle-aged ladies any favours.

Deirdre from 50 & Fabulous with My Friend Deirdre acknowledged that women should always wear what makes them feel comfortable and happy.

However, she shared some of her personal opinions for those looking for a little helping hand when it comes to "looking fresher, more modern and even better" as opposed to "frumpy".

The style enthusiast said: "Something that tends to make us look a bit frumpier is wearing a whole all pastel-coloured outfit.

"I love pastel shades - they're so pretty - but what I'm talking about here is all-over pastel. There's something about an all-pastel outfit that just makes us look a little bit granny-ish - don't get me wrong, grannies are wonderful people."

Deirdre explained that the reason she isn't a big fan of all-over pastels is that their "softness" makes them too similar to softer hair colours.

Mature women often sport softer hair colours as their hair starts to lose pigment.

The style guru said: "Then there's very little differentiation between our clothes and our hair, which results in a sort of ghostly, washed-out look - which isn't very youthful."

Now this doesn't mean women over 50 must ditch their favourite pastel items. It simply means adding the occasional pop of bright colour.

This could be a statement piece such as a vibrant jumper, or a bold pair of earrings, depending on how comfortable you are wearing bright shades.

"But of course, the easiest way to inject colour - especially in the summer - is with a bright-coloured dress."

Praising bold dresses, the expert claimed that these can make you feel "more youthful and uplifted - the dopamine effect".

A bold dress can be paired with minimalistic jewellery and neutral accessories including shoes and a handbag.

The style expert previously spoke to GB News about the ageing clothing items women over 50 should ditch.

She offered a top style tip for middle-aged ladies: "One of the key things that will indicate your age is your silhouette. That’s the initial impression that people get when they look at you."

Women over 50 can also look 10 years younger if they "stop" wearing the outfit colour that makes them seem "tired".
