Accessories can make or break an outfit

Jewellery can be used to pull a look together but women may be surprised to learn some pieces can be ageing.

A style expert shared how to use jewellery to "add interest" to your outfit and create a more youthful look.

Opting for one eye-catching piece of jewellery rather than layering could be the key to turning heads, according to vintage fashion expert and owner of Modes and More Susie Nelson.

She told GB News: "One stunning piece of statement jewellery on a classic outfit can be a real head turner and add interest."

Statement jewellery could be a colourful necklace, an eye-catching brooch or oversized earrings.

What women should avoid, however, is large pearls or outdated heirloom jewellery. Instead, opt for unique pieces.

Susie continued: "For youthful dressing, ditch the pearls and heirloom jewellery and find some one-of-a-kind items, be they necklaces, brooches, earrings or other accessories."

When it comes to picking outfits, Susie shared another trick that will turn back the clock is opting for well-fitting garments only.

A good way to ensure your clothes make the right impression is through tailoring, but the correct underwear can also help build a good foundation for an outfit.

Susie continued: "The right underwear and foundations assist this.

"Opt for a well-fitting bra (baggy boobs not needed) and grab a pair of Spanx or such like for the tummy area if required."

This comes as design manager at Hockerty Teresa Fernández said wearing garments that don't fit properly is one of the most ageing fashion mistakes.

She told GB News: "As we get older, two common style missteps are ignoring fit and playing it too safe.

"Wearing clothes that don't fit well can ruin even the nicest outfit. Made-to-measure pieces ensure a perfect fit. Don't be afraid to add some bold colours or patterns to keep your look fresh."

Women over 40 have been urged to "ditch" a colour that washes them out. Experts also advise they avoid style trends as this will help them to look sophisticated and be "confident at any age".
