Middle-aged women may want to swap their long, full skirts for knee-length ones

Personal style is just that: personal. However, according to a style expert for women over 50, some items simply aren't flattering after a certain age.

Deirdre Nicholas from 50 & Fabulous with My Friend Deirdre spoke exclusively to GB News about the looks that middle-aged women might want to reconsider. She advised this demographic to get rid of their "too long and voluminous" skirts.

The style enthusiast said: "Skirts that are too long and all-enveloping are really ageing and make anyone look older and more fuddy-duddy or frumpy."

But this doesn't mean women over 50 need to swap their maxi A-line skirts for skirts micro-mini ones but rather, find a balance.

Deirdre advised women over 50 to "go really wild and wear a skirt or dress that’s knee-length".

She continued: "But if you love a midi or a maxi skirt, just be a little careful about how you style them because this is key. The main issue here is proportion and balance.

"When we get to a certain age, many of us tend to gain some weight and generally thicken up a bit - I know I have - and we often don’t like our legs as much anymore.

"So, the temptation is to cover them up as much as possible with floaty or voluminous skirts.

"But, the combination of a slightly heavier body and a longer, full skirt means that we are starting to look a bit like a block."

Deirdre advised that midi skirts may be the way to go. She said: "The long skirts weigh us down - especially if they have lots of material - so go for a midi skirt that stops at the point on your leg where your calf is starting to slim down (not on the widest part of your calf) and go for skirts that are slightly slimmer fit or straight.

"That way, you won’t get the ageing volume and your legs will look slimmer too, which is 'youthifying'."

The influencer's next tip was to ditch round-toed shoes, as she believes these can age you prematurely'

She said: "I know this is a little controversial because round-toed shoes can be so comfy. But, I really think that the type of footwear we choose says a lot about our age as well as our style.

"So, why ditch round-toed shoes? Well, mainly because they’re really not very flattering, especially with skirts or shorter trousers, as they make the foot and the leg look shorter and frumpier and have a foreshortening effect."

Deirdre recommends going for shoes with almond-shaped toes or slightly pointed toes.

She explained: "That way, the whole effect of what you are wearing is elongated - your legs will look longer and slimmer and you will look taller and more polished, not to say younger too."

According to Deirdre, women over 50 can look 10 years younger by ditching "baggy and saggy" clothing items.

She explained: "When we see a well-dressed, modern, youthful-looking woman, she isn’t normally wrapped up in hundreds of layers or draped so heavily that we can’t see her body at all."
