Stawberries are the nation's favourite fruit, according to new research

How you store fruit and vegetables can affect how long they last as well as how they taste.

Food experts have shared the best way to keep the fruit fresher for longer with a clever hack using paper towels.

There is often debate about where strawberries should be stored.

The fruit is often displayed out of the fridge in supermarkets, and this is how 64 per cent of Britons said they would keep them at home.

However, storing the berries loose and in the warmth of the kitchen might be affecting how long they last.

According to experts at Love Fresh Berries, the fridge is the best place for lasting fruit.

The experts said: "Help berries last longer by storing them in glass mason jars or airtight containers in the fridge."

Removing strawberries from their packaging and putting them into an airtight container could help their longevity.

Excess moisture can cause strawberries to go bad quickly so use paper towels to help keep them fresh.

The experts added: "For fresher strawberries, lay strawberries on a paper towel when storing to absorb moisture – often a cause of berries spoiling quicker – for extra freshness."

Over half of Britons said they will buy berries weekly, so storing them for the best flavour is important.

The experts claimed giving strawberries time to warm up before eating will allow the flavours to come through.

"For better tasting strawberries, allow berries to warm up to room temperature before eating," they stated."

Strawberries - like all fresh produce - will taste better when it is in season.

The fruit is considered to be in season from spring until late summer in the UK.
