The discount retailer will close more stores across the UK after shutting shops earlier this year

Poundstretcher has shared some locations are to close in the latest blow for the high street.

It's not all bad news, however, as the retailer has also opened more stores in the country.

Stores in Kilmarnock, Scotland, Romford, England and Ammanford, Wales have 'closing down' signs displayed outside.

The store in Kimarnock opened in 2021 and filled a store that was more than 36,000 sq ft.

This follows locations that have recently closed, or have plans to close, in other parts of the country.

This includes Leyland, Grantham, St Austell, Penzance, Hinckley, Watford, Grimsby and Hatch Warren.

Poundstretcher is a much loved British brand that sells a range of food, homeware and garden essentials.

It will not be gone for long, however, as it has shared plans to open a further 50 stores in the UK.

This includes branches in Alnwick and Allenton that are both expected to open before the end of the month.

Stores have already opened this year in Kent, Maidenhead and St Neots.

This comes as Poundstretcher launched around 30 new sites in the UK in 2022.

There are around 315 stores across the country with around 70 per cent of branches located in England.

Poundstretcher has made a number of important business decisions this week affecting customers and staff.

Earlier this year, nearly 4,000 employees were given a 10 per cent pay rise.

All staff who had worked for the company for at least one year were eligible for the increase.

This was thought to affect more than 70 per cent of staff and followed a similar 10 per cent pay rise for Poundstretcher staff last year.

The retailer is one of many brands on the British high street that have opened and closed stores in 2023.

Supermarket giant Tesco has closed locations this year, including one that shut for good this month.

A Tesco Express in Liverpool shut its doors for good last week following two other branch closures in September.

Clarks, M&S and Homebase all have stores that have ceased trading this month.
