An expert spoke exclusively to GB News about how women can "renew, protect and nourish" their skin

While everybody wants gorgeous, glowing skin, how you should go about it will vary depending on your age.

Offering his insights on how women can improve their complexion, plastic surgeon Dr Gregory S Keller spoke to GB News about the best practices for every decade.

Dr Keller, founder of Keller Plastic Surgery, stated: "For any age, the goal is to stimulate your skin's natural renewal process while protecting and nourishing it from within and externally."

However, this will be achieved differently from decade to decade as you move from a youthful to a more mature complexion.

20s and 30s

Dr Keller advised: "Focus on prevention. Use sunscreen daily, maintain hydration and incorporate lightweight anti-ageing ingredients like Defensins to preserve youthful skin."

Defensins, as defined by Leslie Baumann MD Cosmetic Dermatologist, are a "type of peptide".

She explained: "Defensins have been shown to stimulate a specific type of stem cell called LGR6+, which is responsible for creating new keratinocytes within the epidermis of the skin. The result is a 'fresh' layer of skin on the surface with fewer lines, wrinkles, and other signs of ageing."

40s and 50s

According to Dr Keller, the 40s and 50s are the time to start considering anti-ageing procedures. While a skin-boosting regime, adequate hydration and a healthy diet can work wonders, treatments may be able to produce more dramatic results.

The expert said: "As we age into the 50s and experience more sun damage, I suggest trying treatments like lasers, IPL, Ulthera and microneedling RF. You can augment these treatments with DefenAge to reverse skin ageing."

For anyone considering cosmetic treatments - whether it's non-surgical or surgical - doing your research is imperative. You must also make sure a professional is administering your treatment.

60s and beyond

Dr Keller advised: "Combine targeted skin care with professional treatments such as IPL or microneedling RF. DefenAge products remain a cornerstone, activating stem cells for noticeable rejuvenation."

Women can easily incorporate stem cells into their skin care routine. Kim Gallo Esthetics explained: "In skin care, stem cells are primarily used for their ability to repair and rejuvenate. They receive signals indicating where repair is needed, initiating the creation of new cells and promoting tissue healing.

"This process is supported by growth factors, which aid in cell multiplication and turnover, enhancing the skin's natural renewal cycle.

"Some stem cells also have anti-inflammatory properties, making them useful in calming and soothing skin."

As for how to source these for your skin care, the experts explained that plant stem cells are "commonly used for their antioxidant properties".

The skin gurus added: "Extracts from sources like Swiss apples, edelweiss and grape seeds are favoured for their ability to complement other skincare ingredients and enhance overall skin health."

In terms of targeted skin care, an expert named the three "powerhouse" ingredients that are crucial for younger skin.

GB News recently did a deep dive into how women can achieve "the best skin of their life".

For this, Dr Keller exclusively revealed the "foundation" of a great complexion, claiming that cleansing is the cornerstone of any effective skin care routine.

The final essential step in Dr Keller's skin care advice is daily sun protection, which he described as a "non-negotiable".

The skin-savvy expert recommended applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 every day, regardless of weather conditions.

In other skin care news, a dermatologist named the "gold standard" product "making people age backwards".

Diligent skin care and observing a healthy lifestyle are totally essential for a radiant glow. For those who are keen to enlist the help of professionals for anti-ageing treatments, it's important to be aware of the risks and do your research.
