Incorporate it into your routine for skin that is "flexible, elastic and resilient"

Skin changes are inevitable as we age, with many women reporting issues such as reduced elasticity, thinness, paleness, dryness, and an increase in fine lines and wrinkles.

However, it's possible to slow down the ageing process with a strategic skin care routine that tackles these concerns.

Taking to TikTok, dermatologist Dr Paul shared her effective daily skin care regime for women over 50.

She advised ladies in this age group to look for products containing peptides. As defined by the experts at skin care brand CeraVe, peptides are small fragments of proteins found in "every tissue and cell of the human body".

They help your body create structural proteins such as collagen and elastin that make your skin "flexible, elastic and resilient".

With age, the body produces fewer peptides, which can contribute to the weakening of the skin and issues such as fine lines and wrinkles, sagging and a loss of firmness.

Incorporating peptides into your skin care routine will mimic the peptides found naturally in the body.

Dr Paul (who goes by @drtiapaul on TikTok) advised women in their 50s and beyond to find a moisturiser that contains this skin-saving ingredient.

She explained that peptides "stimulate collagen production", and in turn, "help with fine lines and a loss of firmness".

Moisturiser is an essential product for a youthful, glowing complexion. As defined by CeraVe, moisturisers are "cream or gel-textured skincare products which contain a blend of humectants and emollients".

Humectants serve to "draw in moisture from the air and surface layers of skin and retain it", while emollients "help to trap moisture in skin and aid in softening skin texture through rich hydration".

Because moisturiser is so beneficial for the skin, it's crucial you're maximising its benefits - but according to one expert, you're probably doing it wrong.

Dr Paul shared her top tips for an effective skin care regime over 50, complete with cleansing, a skin-boosting serum, moisturiser, eye cream and sunscreen.

Morning skin care routine for women over 50

1. Gently cleanse your skin, ensure you choose one that "does not strip the skin's natural oils".

2. Apply a serum that contains vitamin C, to combat an "uneven skin tone".
3. Moisturise using a product that contains peptides and hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid will tackle any unwanted dryness.
4. Use an eye cream to "hydrate" the delicate, thin skin below the eyes.
5. Generously apply sunscreen, remembering not to neglect your ears, neck, chest and hands.
